The idea to hold a finale conference of the “Biosphere Evolution, Transitions and Resilience” (BETR) NERC and NSFC co-funded research programme was detailed in the original programme plan. It aims to celebrate five years of fruitful collaboration not only among researchers from both the UK and China, but also between the two key natural science funding bodies of both countries. The finale will offer a stage for the involved researchers of all three research projects to showcase their main scientific findings and provide an opportunity for the larger palaeoscience community (in UK, China and also internationally) to come together, especially after more than more than two years of covid-related isolation.  However, due to continuing covid travel restrictions in China, our Chinese colleagues most likely will not be able to make the meeting in person, and so this meeting will be a hybrid meeting, which will enable the UK colleagues and the invited speakers to come together in person and have discussions through zoom with our Chinese colleagues.

The aims and objectives of the finale meeting include:
Showcase the science – We aim to showcase key scientific findings arising from a new model of bilateral research funding that involves close collaborations among scientists of both countries.
Train future research leaders – A major role will be played by the early career researchers of both countries who will synthesise their joint research within and between projects in the programme’s final year.
Facilitate networking - Network building for early career researchers of both countries has been key to the programme’s success thus far and this will be advanced by the involvement of researchers outside the project and beyond China and the UK.
Brainstorming towards the future - Communications during organisation of the joint science meeting will help the two sides to gain mutual understanding of each other’s research and the existing science community (people, facilities, funding, etc.), which will help both parties not only to cooperate within the framework of existing projects, but also to find potential fields of collaboration for the future.

We have identified several targets of common interest, including but not limited to:
  • Key factors linking critical biosphere transitions in Earth history;
  • Role of predetermination in major biosphere crises, e.g. in weakening stabilising negative feedbacks;
  • Commonalities between biological, geochemical and modelling approaches to biosphere evolution.

As the meeting is hybrid, to enable scientific communication and the attendance of our Chinese colleagues, we will start the meeting very early in the morning.
